This is truly one of the funniest & most original comedies i’ve seen in quite awhile – with a hilarious and refreshingly realistic portrayal of what happens when you take drugs. Most movies just show really basic interpretations of people on different drugs but this movie will have you constantly pissing yourself laughing and thinking “been there”. The way Seth Rogen’s character portrays his trippy night of pharmaceuticals is just perfection. Its got Joseph Gordon Levitt – Seth Rogen – Anthony Mackie – with Mindy Kaling & Lizzie Caplan as side characters – its also got some cameo’s in the form of James Franco and Miley Cyrus amongst others.
There is a slightly deeper story arc than you might think in a movie from this genre, it begins with three best friends, one of whom tragically loses their mother and father just before Christmas. There began a new tradition that his two best friends became his family and on Christmas eve every year they check off all the typical Christmas checklist; including the tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller, eating Chinese food, wearing slightly racist Christmas jumpers, doing karaoke & emulating the movie ‘Big’ by playing a tune on the massive toy piano etc..
we get some fantastic flashbacks :
The story is loosely based on the structure of 1988’s Scrooge, involving the ghost of Christmas Past, Present and Future. In which Ebeneezer Scrooge is visited by a spirit that shows him 3 parts of his life, a lesson to be learnt from each. The Night Before switches this up a little by making the Ghost a Drug dealer (Specifically weed not the stronger of the pharmaceuticals) the three protagonists of the movie each have a time of their life shown to them and in turn have a lesson to learn or a truth to come to terms with. All done in a witty, drug-fueled ridiculously festive movie. We’ve got some smooth karaoke dance moves.
Some whimsically hilarious ‘elf’ faces.
Isaac (Rogen) plays a father-to-be who’s on call in case his wife goes into labour, needless to say he gets a little sidetracked..
Ethan (Gordon-Levitt) is stuck in a rut, in his thirties and still doing odd jobs and needs a little kick in the but to get his shit together.
Then we have Chris (Mackie) who’s shot to stardom as an athlete, we’re immediately shown that this is due to some non-recreational drugs.
Since its Christmas there’s some heartfelt and enjoyably juvenile presents.
This is the kicker, so the night before Christmas has been the boys tradition for 14 years, but this year is the last time they’re going to do it. The Mommy-to-be gives her husband the most incredible gift for his last Christmas before they’ve a baby, a box of drugs. Wife of the Year anyone? This present sets the scene.
There were several laugh-out-loud moments in this movie, but Isaac tripping balls thinking the nativity scene was real was definitely a highlight.
We see some all too relatable attempts to not look wired AF.
Some moments reminiscent of “Big” but with some highly inappropriate lyrics for a TOYS-R-US store..
This is a legitimately enjoyable stoner film, there’s a lot of references to other Christmas movies in it, (Die Hard, The Grinch, Home Alone etc..) but it’s different structure than your typical Harold and Kumar’s or Pineapple expresses and i particularly enjoyed that while it alluded to some old Christmas movies through clever references or Easter eggs, it didn’t remind me of any other stoner flick i’d seen. There’s also a bit of a self-reflective side to the film that i wasn’t initially expecting. All three have a lesson to learn but the lessons are all under the umbrella of Freud’s Ego Defense Mechanisms. Sublimation, Denial, Suppression etc.. although i copped onto the Dealer being Father Christmas and the Ghost to bring their realizations about i didn’t see the philosophical side till i watched it a second time. there was some surprisingly succinct thoughts pondered out-loud that although sound basic actually have some loud reverberations to most adults lives.
Some even more shockingly poignant observations from Miley Cyrus
some rambunctious misdemeanors
and trippy moments …… wait for it.
We have a well-crafted nod to Stephen King
Some near mishaps where the urge to vomit arrives when your at church for midnight mass.
Possibly one of the best presents around : a Wu-Tang onesie.
So smoke up big when your watching this, its quickly become my preferred Christmas Eve movie, watching it incredibly stoned always adds a few layers of chuckles regardless of the content, very little herbal help would be needed for this one. Christmas and Stoner movie put together, what more could you want.
