This is a tv series that is a thoroughly enjoyable one for an easy-going hangover couch day. It’s not a high-brow highly intellectual show nor does it pretend to be, but its witty, surprisingly uniquely comedic
and got a good bit of action. It’s loosely based on the concept of God, the devil, heaven, hell and angels. The premise being that Lucifer (son of God) who was cast down to punish people in hell for disobeying his father. Until one day our Lucifer said fuck that and moved to LA, opened up a club and started fucking shit uuuup.
It’s cast hails mostly new faces (to my screen anyway) but that was something I quite liked as the suspension of disbelief wasn’t challenged at all right from the beginning. Initially within the first few minutes of the pilot you wonder how it’s going to play out, they work it well and any qualms or worries you had/have disappear.
What this series did that intrigued me was that it actually subverts and challenges the discourses around the concept of Lucifer itself, of Satan worshipping and the devil fanatics that misappropriate its image and beliefs. Although our Lucifer has a devilish side, he believes punishment is only fitting for those deserving of it, evil deeds done to innocents is something he fights against.
The women in this text are also represented quite interestingly. It’s made abundantly clear pretty damn quick that although Lucifer and his comrades have some metaphysical powers, the women actually control the majority of the plot and the logic that runs throughout the show. We have a psychiatrist, a love itnerest, a forensic anthropologist and a warrior… pretty damn badass.
There’s also some gloriously choreographed fight scenes..
We’ve also got some seriously phenomenal figures floating about..
The cinematography in it was actually something that impressed me, the shots and mis-en-scene were a little more developed and aesthetic than I’d expected in a series like this.
We’ve some damn adorable Halloween costumes, a little Martian, also quite a relevant and interesting one in 2018 right now considering Elon Musk has just sent Falcon Heavy on a billion year orbit around Mars. We doubt that real-life Martians could compare in adorability to this little one though..
