A further investigation and analysis of Janes Tattoos, the mysteries they hold and her murky + elusive past.
So this episode begins with Jane and Dr. Borden in a session and he’s performing the Rorschach test on her (psychologists use this test to examine a persons personality characteristics and emotional functioning, with Jane’s amnesia Docs hope is that the ethereal nature of the images might provoke another memory)
The next – she answers “target”.
In the middle of these Jane asks Doc if the team have told him that she might have been a navy SEAL – he says that they have – she replies that her only memory is shooting in the woods but it didn’t seem that official – Doc responds “SEAL training is often unconventional so that actually makes sense”.
We then see Kurt taking Jane to a room with a loada weapons on the table and says that since her ‘first memory was triggered by being active, maybe your muscles might remember something your mind cant’ – and boy was he right.
Whilst shooting Jane recovers her second memory :
She’s saved from telling Weller what she remembered when Reade announces that the hospital called and that Chao’s dead – he had a massive stroke – Weller notices the doc walking away from the room while all others are rushing into it – but no one in the hospital could place him.
Patterson then tells them that she’s unlocked another tattoo.
The chinese symbols behind Jane’s ear – the first clue that they decoded was an address; 399 Whitestreet apartment 7 . so in this new tattoo the text above the red mandala style tatt begins with “399” & then has a bunch of letters jumbled up in between and then ends with “7” . for anyone that knows what a “Vigenere Cipher” is – things will start clicking into place .. its a poly-alphabetic substitution code – catchy huh! A Vigenere Cipher is a method of encrypting alphabetic text based on the letters of a key word (and unless you have that key word its impossible to decode).
So with this in mind – use “Whitestreet apartment” as your key word and the letters in between become “Major Arthur Gibson” . The first clue unlocks the second…
So who is Major Arthur Gibson – well according to his service record he flew F22 missions over Iraq & Afghanistan.
The team finds his address in Brooklyn and pay him a visit – he acts incredibly sketchy & denies them entry into his house – tells them to get off his property and promptly blows up his gaff – pretty badass exit.
By the time the fire departments gone through it they discover that it was a distraction – Gibson rigged the place to blow and escaped . They meet his former superiors and they tell him that Gibsons injury was psychological – claiming that his PTSD got worse n worse till they had to ground him & when desk work became too much for him they discharged him . After some of Patterson sleuthing they find out that they were lied to – at the time when he was supposedly demoted and grounded – he was actually promoted & raised his security clearance from secret to top secret and above . Being FBI they know that Nevada (where Gibson was living) is where the Airforce Drone Program is based . They made him a drone pilot . Duh duh DUH! Then they see that after Nevada he was moved to New York and there is no drone program there – at least not that they know of … Gibson had been forced to kill a LOT of innocent people on US soil – and was abandoned by his country – he’s exacting revenge on those who betrayed him.
We then meet this ol one who’s high high up in the military ranks who informs the team that “it was decided that the country needed a domestic UAV program that could not only surveil targets but also in extreme circumstances.. take action” So basically there’s armed drones flying over american soil . Gibson got control of one by kidnapping the daughter of one of our avionic specialist & forced him to retrofit a drone with an alternate control card that severed its signal w their satellite allowing Gibson to take over remotely.
Back at the FBI headquarters Jane and Zapata are talking – “Gibson didn’t seem to recognize me & neither did Chao – so far the tattoos have sent us to people that don’t seem to be connected to me at all” Zapata replies “if they’ve got nothing to do w you why are they on your body?” Jane responds cryptically “Penance” and again we see the flashback :
(so we see that Jane is assuming that her past life was increasingly suspicious and nefarious)
We then see Weller & Mayfair having a discussion about Taylor Shaw . (when Weller was ten his next door neighbour went missing – no body was ever found – case unsolved)
Weller talks about one of his last memories of her was climbing a tree in his back yard and he slipped and stood on her hand – “She fell and cut herself – left a really big scar on the back of her neck – Jane has the same scar – the same eyes & shes the right age – i know why its me, why my name is on her back, i think Jane Doe is Taylor Shaw” .
Back to the episodes main plot – Since Gibson used one to blow up his former CO, he still has 2 missiles left in his drone . The team find a list of dates and times & locations on Gibsons laptop.
They each line up with seemingly unrelated explosive accidents . Faulty gas lines – car crashes etc. Victims were ALL foreign nationals, ALL from the Middle East, ALL incidents occurring on US soil. Drone attacks. On the right side of the above picture are 2 sets of initials : AG – Arthur Gibson, and IM – Ivan Musgrave (another drone pilot).
Upon meeting him they find out that Gibson was turned in by Major Ivan Musgrave ^ and realise that they just took a protected man outside – where Gibson was waiting with his second missile. Another drone attack ensues. But before it can Jane sees the Bearded man standing a few dozen metres from her.
Weller drags her inside to avoid the missile attack and the group are mostly unscathed. When she goes back outside the Bearded man is gone and there are several casualties.
They figure out that Gibson’s next target is one of the FBI headquarters where unknownst to most of the employees the top three floors are where the NYC Drone Program operate from. The find him and manage to neutralize the threat.
Which included a high speed car chase ( & crash ) during which Jane has a further recollection of the memory she’d had a snapshot of earlier. So we get to delve further in and she realises it was not an innocent nun she murdered. It absolves her soul a little.
They recover the girl too. Quite nice secondary feature running along side – the original missing girl being ‘Taylor Shaw’ – Jane says to Kurt “We got her back” to which Kurt responds with strong undertones of double meanings “yeah, we did” i see what you did there…
With the current theme being government corruption – since thats what these tattoos are suggesting – but of course the Airforce then decide to spin the explosions as accidents ( faulty engine & natural gas leak ) . the team saves the day & Jane looks unfairly perfect even post-missile attack.
Back at Headquarters Mayfair informs Weller that shes ordered Taylor case files to be delivered and Patterson will test Taylor’s DNA against Jane’s . will they really give us conclusive proof of Jane Does identity by episode 3!? this seems too good to be true .
The last minute of the episode contains our good ol Bearded man who sneaks up on Jane in her apartment (obviously getting past her round the clock security detail – so we know he’s a pro) he whispers “dont, dont make a sound” and then the episode ends – one hell of a cliffhanger.
